Therapy Dog & CGC Classes – New Jersey

 Make Sit Happen, LLC
Ongoing all year round in Hillsborough, NJ!

This is a 5 week class of instruction that will help you prepare you and your dog to take both the Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dog test and the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test.

This class assumes that you already have achieved a certain amount of reliability with the Basic Obedience commands of ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘stay or wait’, ‘come’, walking with out pulling on the leash, and ‘leave it’.

We will improve your dog’s skills with those Basic commands.  We do not teach Basic commands in this class; however, we help you improve upon what your dog already knows.  We will expose you and your dog to wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, different people, noises, etc.

We also explain what you can expect on Therapy Visits, how to get started, what the ‘rules’ and considerations are, and anything else you can think to ask! The tests will be given on week 5 – and the test date will be determined with class participants before scheduling, should you feel you need more time to practice.

Class Descriptions:

Puppy Playtime/Trick Class: For all breeds/Ages 3 months to 2 years or any dogs who have been “Grandfathered in”. Teach your pups fun tricks to perform….then let them off leash to play and socialize with other pups. It is imperative that dogs learn proper manners around other dogs at an early age. This can be helpful as they grow and encounter strange dogs. Pups that have displayed aggression towards other dogs are kindly asked to set up a private appointment with me and not take this class.

Puppy Class/Basic Obedience 101: For all breeds/Ages 3 months to 2 years. Instruction on housebreaking and crate training, the importance of socialization, dealing with unwanted puppy behaviors such as jumping, chewing & nipping, and introduction to simple commands such as come, sit, stay, leash manners and much more!

Come to me and Walk this way: For all breeds/ Ages 6 months and up. The next level for dogs that have taken puppy classes or basic obedience 101. We will continue education for your dogs by fine tuning already known skills and master two things that each dog owner needs most! Recall, the “come” or “here” command will be our focus in distracted environments. This could save their lives someday. We will also master walking on leash around distractions and other dogs, get your walking partner under control.

Agility 1: Beginner: Intro to jumps, weave poles, tunnels, tire, and more!

AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC): This class will prep your dogs and help them to pass the CGC test. It will include walking your dog through crowds, sit/down/and stay on your command, accepting friendly strangers (people and other dogs). We will teach your dog to sit while being petted by a stranger. Come when called. How to react when you walk away from them. We will make your dog a model citizen, and help them to earn a “CGC” title awarded from The American Kennel Club (AKC).

AKC Community Canine ( Advanced Canine Good Citizen): This class is for dogs who have passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program. The dogs that pass the Community Test will earn a “CGCA” title. This class prepares your dog to perform for you in real situations like classes and your community with real distractions. They are taught to focus on you no matter what is going on around them.

Therapy Dog Preparation Class: This class is strictly geared toward teaching your dog the skills they will need to pass a Therapy Dog Test. They will need to show obedience towards their handlers commands, no aggression towards other prospective therapy dogs or people, and calmness in a simulated hospital setting. Specific drills and socialization will be exercised in each session. Once they are ready to be tested, the dog must be 1 year of age and must have lived with their handler for at least 6 months.
